How to create or join a Rust PC server
To play now, follow the joining path. To host your world on a Windows PC, start with installation.
In this guide
Choose your path
This guide covers Rust PC. Your computer and the server program must stay running for friends to play. Linux, plugins and remote administration are outside this guide.
Join on PC · Copy the server address
- Get the IP address and port from its listing. Check its rules and next wipe, when world progress resets.
- In Rust PC, press F1 and enter connect address:port, replacing address:port with the listing details. Press Enter.
Check: you arrive on the server you chose.
IP · F1
connect address:port
Create on Windows · Install the server with SteamCMD
- Download SteamCMD from the Valve documentation linked below. On Windows, extract it into its own folder and run steamcmd.exe.
- In SteamCMD, enter the commands in the diagram one at a time. C:\RustServer is our example folder; you can change it. Wait for installation to finish before quit.
Check: RustDedicated.exe appears in your chosen folder.
Installation
force_install_dir C:\RustServer
login anonymous
app_update 258550 validate
quit
Create on Windows · Create your startup file
- In C:\RustServer, create RunServer.bat with the command in the diagram. Show file extensions to avoid RunServer.bat.txt. The name, map size and player limit are examples.
- For friends outside your network, allow and forward the game and query UDP ports to your server PC: 28015 and 28017 here. Follow your router and firewall instructions.
Check: router ports match the startup command.
Startup
RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015 +server.queryport 28017 +server.level "Procedural Map" +server.seed 1234 +server.worldsize 3000 +server.maxplayers 10 +server.hostname "My Rust Server" +server.identity "myserver"
Create on Windows · Test before inviting the group
- Run RunServer.bat and wait for Server startup complete. On the same PC, press F1 and test connect localhost:28015.
- Ask a friend outside your network to test your public IP with port 28015. A local connection does not prove Internet access.
Check: your friend joins while your PC and server stay running.
Local then remote test
connect localhost:28015
Playing Rust Console Edition?
The SteamCMD setup and F1 console above are for Rust PC. For Console Edition, use the community servers and providers listed by Double Eleven. Check supported platforms: a Rust PC hosting plan does not establish console compatibility.

Local connections work but my friend cannot join
Check the public address, UDP forwarding to the correct PC and firewall. If your connection cannot accept incoming forwarding, ask your Internet provider or choose a hosting service.
My server is missing from the game list
Check server.queryport too. It must differ from the game port and be reachable over UDP. A direct IP test separates game access from visibility in the list.
