Can’t join a Minecraft server?

Keep the message shown by the game nearby. Choose what to check: these steps help narrow down the problem, but some fixes require the server operator.

What is stopping you?

Minecraft Java

  1. On Java, open Multiplayer, then Add Server or Direct Connection. Paste the connection address from the listing and confirm.
  2. On Java, check the version and any mods required by the community before changing your installation.
  3. If the server uses an allowlist, ask the operator to check that your account is allowed. On Bedrock, provide your exact Gamertag.

Minecraft Bedrock

  1. On Bedrock, if your device offers Add Server, enter the supplied address and port. Do not replace the port with another server’s port.
  2. On Bedrock, “Outdated Client” means your client is too old: check for game updates. “Outdated Server” requires a server update: contact the operator.
  3. If the server uses an allowlist, ask the operator to check that your account is allowed. On Bedrock, provide your exact Gamertag.

Consoles may limit custom server connections. Check the server’s instructions for your device.

Check your edition

  1. Check whether you play Minecraft Java or Bedrock, then compare it with the edition on the server listing.
  2. A Java address does not establish Bedrock access. If the server supports both, use the address and port provided for your edition.

Consoles may limit custom server connections. Check the server’s instructions for your device.

Check access requirements

  1. If the server uses an allowlist, ask the operator to check that your account is allowed. On Bedrock, provide your exact Gamertag.
  2. If multiplayer is disabled, read the official account settings guidance. For a child account, ask the family group organizer.

Changing the address does not replace server or account permission.
